I've had similar experiences. At the time great tragedy, disappointment, etc., I can't fathom why something happened or why God supposedly didn't answer prayers. Then later -- often years later -- it's all revealed to me and I realize that if God had responded in the way I had been asking, it wouldn't have been to my benefit. He is always looking out for our good, and His timing is always perfect, especially during the times when we don't initially understand. This reminds me of something I once read, although I don't know where the quote is from: "Sometimes a delay in your plans is God's protection."
