Interesting. As I was reading your commentary, I was thinking, “The Pharisees biggest problem is that they did not fear God. That is why they did not fall to their knees and repent.” And then you came to the opposite conclusion?
We both have the conclusion, I believe; I just focused on a different aspect of it in this article. Because the scribes and Pharisees did not fear God, they hardened their hearts and ultimately put Him to death. In the passage immediately following today’s Gospel reading, Jesus warned the scribes and Pharisees that their hypocrisy would lead to their eternal damnation. However, they feared neither God nor His justice and punishments, which is why they persisted in their sinfulness. Hopefully that clarifies my conclusion for you! God bless!
