There is an interesting history behind that. According to my 1962 Angelus Press Missal (which is where I obtained the quote I used in my article), the blessing of ashes "was originally instituted for public penitents, but is now intended for all Christians, as Lent should be a time of penance for all." Lent is an opportunity for us to recognize that we are all sinners in need of repentance. May God bless you!
I did not know the prayer over the ashes! Thank you adding the additional history to our practice!
My favorite part of the blessing of the ashes prayer was "spare the penitent".
