My favorite part of the blessing of the ashes prayer was "spare the penitent".

There is an interesting history behind that. According to my 1962 Angelus Press Missal (which is where I obtained the quote I used in my article), the blessing of ashes "was originally instituted for public penitents, but is now intended for all Christians, as Lent should be a time of penance for all." Lent is an opportunity for us to recognize that we are all sinners in need of repentance. May God bless you!
