Catholic Authority in Spiritual Warfare | Dan Schneider on Exorcism & His Latest Book

In this Missio Dei Catholic Podcast episode, we interview Dr. Dan Schneider, author of Spiritual Warfare Q & A for Priests and Laity.

Dr. Schneider explains the crucial distinction between power and authority in the spiritual life—a difference often misunderstood, especially in Protestant approaches to deliverance and exorcism. While some may attempt to confront evil spirits through sheer force of will or borrowed prayers, true authority comes only through Christ and His Church.

He emphasizes the importance of properly renouncing spirits by name and closing any doors that sin may have opened. This renunciation, however, is not merely a formula of words; it must flow from a heart living in obedience to God and strengthened by the sacraments.

The state of grace is essential. Demons are legalists—they recognize and exploit any claim they can make over a soul bound by sin. A person in mortal sin, lacking sacramental confession and the grace of the Eucharist, has no true authority over evil spirits. But when rooted in Christ, protected by His Church, and sealed by the sacraments, the Christian stands clothed in authentic authority, able to command demons to depart in the name of Jesus.

We also discuss the dangers of yoga and other false spiritual practices, the unique authority Christ entrusted to His Church, and how both priests and laity can engage rightly in the spiritual battle.
