I'm reminded of the sheepdog cartoon in Looney Tunes, where the sheepdog, acting for the shepherd, always figures out the schemes of Coyote to steal sheep, no matter what disguise or trick he tries to use. The pope, and all bishops, should have this kind of discernment. They're the sheepdogs of the Good Shepherd.
