I love this gospel reflection. Adding quotes from The Hobbit was so perfect! Touches of whimsy in serious reflections aids in enhancing the message for me; it puts a smile on my face and helps me to remember the reflection throughout the day.

Even if we don’t lose connection with certain friends or family members, the peace and strength from the Holy Spirit that we get through Christ far surpasses any fleeting enjoyment that we get from pursuing the things of the world. Until I came to Christ, the things that I had been substituting for Him never produced the rewards of Christ.

Much of the time, we don’t have to make a lot of major changes in our lifestyle except that we alter our relationship to the things that we have (cf. 2Peter1:4). We do not view them as our source of contentment in life because they have proven to not be our source of contentment over and over again. The peace that passes all understanding can only come from God. See Philippians 4:6-7; 1Peter 5:5-7; James 4:6-10; Romans 6:13-19, 8:28; Proverbs 3:5-6; Matthew 6:25-34, 11:28-30; Psalms 37:7, 55:22; Isaiah 26:3-4, 30:15, 55:6-9; John 6:63; Galatians 5:16-26.
