"The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven [is above all]. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony." (John 3:31-32)
In today's passage from the Gospel of John, we see the significance of Jesus, who came to this earth from above. In the past, prophets were sent to reveal God's word, but when Jesus came, the Gospels clearly show us that this was not another prophet. We read the previous Gospel passages where St. John the Baptist testifies that "He must increase I must decrease." John the Baptist was the final prophet who pointed the way towards Christ, proclaiming indeed that this is the Messiah spoken by the prophets of old. The Gospel of John makes it very evident that Christ is the one from heaven, and whoever believes in Him has eternal life. For Christ is the one whom God sent and who Speaks the words of God.Â
At the heart of today's reading is the understanding that God is above all things and deserves our praise and worship. He is to be honored and respected, for He is the one above all things. Take time in your day today to thank the Lord for sending His Son for our salvation and ask the Lord to give you the continued faith in His Son. Whatever your current situation might be, remember Christ is always there and wants to guide and comfort his children. Accept His testimony that God is truly trustworthy, and while the one who receives Christ's testimony also bears witness.Â
Ponder the words of The Baptist when he said, "He must increase I must decrease" (John 3:30)
