On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea.
Such large crowds gathered around him
that he got into a boat and sat down,
and the whole crowd stood along the shore.
And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying:
“A sower went out to sow.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path,
and birds came and ate it up.
Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil.
It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep,
and when the sun rose it was scorched,
and it withered for lack of roots.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.
But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit,
a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
Whoever has ears ought to hear.”~Matthew 13:1-9
Let us praise the Lord Brothers and Sisters!!!
In today’s Gospel, we read the tale of the Sower. Let us open our ears (and eyes) to his words.
A sower, representing God, comes along to sow seed, (His word/Truth/Scripture). We, therefore, are the soil.
Understanding this we can look at the parable and ask what kind of soil we are?
Do you allow the birds to steal God’s truth from you?
Do you have little soil (faith), therefore when God tries to throw good seed you have no place for it to root?
Similar to the birds, do you allow the thorns to choke the truth out of you, and does their faith in the world outweigh your faith in God?
or
Are you rich soil? Sprouting seed with love and joy for the lord! Accepting His truth and allowing it to take root so that you can Fight off the birds, and thorns.
What is it that helps you to receive the Word of God as nourishment? Adverse conditions abound the birds of anxiety; the thin soil of comfort; the thorns of worries. What threatens your happiness? How can you better your soil?
In today’s day and age, we are distracted by the noise and business of the world. Because of these distractions, it can be difficult to find time to better our soil and spend time with the sower. Though the birds may chirp and the sun may shine, let us pray for an open ear and an open heart, to seek moments of silence with Christ. Therefore, be nourished and produce good fruit!!!
