Pearl of Great Price
Gospel Reflection for July 31, 2024
“Jesus said to his disciples: "The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it." Matthew 13:44-46
The beauty of today’s Gospel can be communicated simply with “the kingdom of heaven is like the pearl of great price.” This is our final end. This is what we were created for. Heaven is the pearl of great price that we are to sell everything for. By everything, Our Lord is telling us that we should desire heaven to absolutely anything. We need to be willing to give up anything in this world: money, fame, family, friends, anything at all, in favor of Heaven and the love that God has for us. Seeking the Pearl of Great Price will yield a treasure that the world could never satisfy.
And so, the question remains for each of us: Do we seek after the Kingdom of Heaven as the Pearl of Great Price? Are we willing to give everything for He who gave everything for us?
