On the Confusion and Blindness of Men
Gospel Reflection - Monday, January 27th
The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said of Jesus,
"He is possessed by Beelzebul," and "By the prince of demons he drives out demons."Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables, "How can Satan drive out Satan?
If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand; that is the end of him.But no one can enter a strong man's house to plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house.
Amen, I say to you, all sins and all blasphemies that people utter will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin."
For they had said, "He has an unclean spirit."
— Mark 3:22-30
The Gospel for today is very fitting for our time, in which confusion reigns supreme. We call evil “good”, and good, “evil”. We lack discernment to recognize which is which, and what’s even worse, very often we even reject the action of the Holy Spirit altogether, preferring to cling to our comfortable, sinful ways instead of being faced with our evil ways.
The scribes are calling Jesus, the very source of all that is good, evil. They are showing therefore their blindness and their lack of discernment, which leads them to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, a grave sin. They have lost all capacity to distinguish good and evil, their souls have been corrupted and confused, to the point where they cannot even recognize the workings of God even when witnessing them with their own eyes.
This Gospel provides a good opportunity to take a look at ourselves and question our understanding:
Are we praying for discernment frequently so we can recognize good and evil?
Are we staying close to God’s Word and living our lives according to it? Or are we picking and choosing according to what’s more convenient, or more accepted by the world?
Have we ever committed the grave sin of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, of calling God evil, of refusing to accept His will over our own?
In our times, when confusion reigns supreme, we must pray incessantly, humbly, and continuously ask the Holy Spirit for discernment, to illuminate our understanding and act on our souls.
If we don’t, we risk becoming like the scribes from Mark 3:22-30: blind, prideful, confused, and sinful.
