In some ways, I wonder if it says more about our Western world becoming more secularized that academics are trending toward rehabilitating Herod's reputation with the 'progress' he made with his building projects. In comparison, Alexander the Great's atrocities, like spearing one of his generals Cletus the Black, I believe was his name, is often footnoted in his story.
