Here in the town, my old home town in PA, where I retired, there is a small community of Discalced Carmelites, of the Byzantine sort. No more than ten or twelve, they chant the Byzantine mass responses together and it is like the sound one imagines might come from angels. Plus. they all work their butts off to support the place, baking, preserves, and raising and breeding miniature horses for sale. Talk about the Lord working in mysterious ways.
Yes, from what I have seen, each Discalced Carmelite Community is different from another. This is why one can *visit* different Communities before committing to an Aspirancy for a year to *see* if Carmel is for them.
I haven’t done the research, but I believe there’s a Discalced Carmelite group near every major city. At least, that’s how it is in Texas! Dallas, Houston, Austin, the Rio Grande Valley.. Discalced Carmelites are everywhere, silently working, praying, singing..
Secular Discalced Carmelites are Communities, usually based out of local parishes. They are divided into Provinces around the country, in every country around the world. Our Superior General is in Rome!
But that’s for the Secular Discalced Carmelites founded by St. Teresa de Jesus’ return to the Primitive Rule of Carmel. You may be thinking of the OG Carmelites, what we call O-Carms: the Order of Carmelites.
