Love Throughout Time
January 2nd, 2026 // John 1:19-28
Today’s Gospel emphasizes God’s great love for humanity throughout the history of creation. John the Baptist mentions Isaiah, who says, “Make straight the way of the Lord.” The context of this verse in Isaiah is the return from Babylonian exile to Jerusalem. It is paralleled here with John being a witness to Jesus Christ. John knows that Christ is coming to free us from the bondage of sin; Isaiah knows God will free His people from bondage in exile. Jesus Christ is coming to fulfill the Old Testament with a life-giving love that will bring us back into communion with the Creator.
In this Christmas season, we can appreciate even more fully the significance of Christ coming down to live as a human. He lived and suffered to show us God’s unending love for us.
