Heirs of His Blessed Life
Gospel Reflection for Tuesday, Dec. 9th 2025 - Matthew 18:12-14
In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a glimpse into the very heart of the Father. The parable is brief, but it reveals something beautiful: God does not love humanity in generalities. He loves in particulars.
He loves each of us, in particular.
He notices when one sheep wanders. He feels the absence of one beloved soul. And he goes out, searching, not out of obligation, but out of desire.
This time of year has a way of speeding up our lives even as the Church gently calls us to slow down. We light our wreaths, check our calendars, we prepare our homes and meanwhile, God is preparing something far more.
He is preparing us. He is drawing us close to His heart.
The catechism opens with this stunning truth:
“God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man.”(CCC 1)
This is the shepherd Jesus describes. The One who seeks the lost and notices when we drift even slightly off the path. The One who pursues us even when we are too tired or distracted to notice He is near.
And to be sure, Advent is full of distractions. The to-do lists multiply and the emails, school events, gift exchanges, travel plans, prepped meals — all good things — can sweep us into a current of unending activity. Yet, today’s Gospel invites us to pause within all the busyness and to ask not what we are doing but why we are doing it…
Love.
CCC1 continues:
“He calls man to see him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son as Redeemer and savior. In his Son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life.”
This is the love that goes searching and does not tire. This is the love we prepare for in Advent, not a sentimental feeling, but the profound reality of a God who desires all men to be heirs of His blessed life. What a gift!
As we approach the half-way mark of Advent, in preparation for the glorious moment of Christ’s birth, let us all pause and refocus our hearts on the beauty of God’s love for us, that He draws close to us in every time and in every place. That His love for us entered the fullness of time and calls us to himself that we may be heirs of his blessed life.
Amen.
Jesus said to his disciples:
“What is your opinion?
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray,
will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills
and go in search of the stray?
And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it
than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.
In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father
that one of these little ones be lost.”
