Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him: and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.
Nathanael saith to him: Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered, and said to him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
Nathanael answered him, and said: Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel.
Jesus answered, and said to him: Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see.
And he saith to him: Amen, amen I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Today’s Gospel is a simple yet powerful reminder of one of the deepest and most meaningful truths of Christian life: Christ knows us intimately. Understanding this truth is a necessary starting point to develop a genuine, loving relationship with Him. We cannot truly have a relationship with Him until we realize that He knows us even better than we know ourselves: our flaws, wounds, fears and talents.
Only when we grasp that fact wholeheartedly can we start moving forward in our pursuit of virtue, and only by realizing that Christ knows our soul whether we want to or not. After accepting that, we can truly start walking with Him and start cultivating a pure heart, by living a life “free of guile”, confessing faithfully, and humbly accepting our mistakes.
It is this willingness to share everything with Christ, understanding that He already knows it, what will give way to a transformed heart in us, one that is more similar to His Sacred Heart.
May we, like Nathanael, live without guile, and may we also, like him, proclaim Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior for all eternity.
