“The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said, ‘Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.’ Then he left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other shore.” (Mk. 8:11-13 NABRE)
Picturing Jesus sighing so deeply, and imagining our Lord and Savior feeling so utterly let down, evokes much emotion.
Let’s stand in Jesus’ shoes for a minute. He has come into the world to proclaim the Good News. He has taught about the Kingdom of God and has traveled far and wide to teach His children how to attain eternal life. Further, He has continuously labored to heal His children not only spiritually, but physically as well.
And yet, the Pharisees argue with Jesus and demand even more from Him. They ask Him for a sign.
Imagine the pain Jesus felt, knowing that so many people did not understand or would not accept Him or His teachings. They were too stuck in their own ways to recognize that God incarnate stood right in their midst.
Is there anything in your life that might be causing Jesus to sigh from the depth of His spirit? Do you recognize God’s presence in your life?
May we strive to lead lives that honor and glorify God, and may we never become blind or indifferent towards the Lord’s presence. May we take the necessary steps to root out the sins in our lives that prevent us from glorifying God. Unlike the Pharisees, may Jesus’ life, teachings, death, and resurrection be enough for us to accept Him as our Lord and to strive to live for Him in everything.
Excellent, Lexis, and may I point out that Pharisees had just witnessed Jesus perform a miracle, a sign, yet they asked for another sign! However, before we shake our heads in disgust at them, we should ask ourselves, "how many times have our prayers been answered, yet when a new problem arises we doubt and fear?"
