“Jesus said to them, “Amen, Amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.”
John 8:58
Jesus was always there, before the beginning of time. After I became a believer in Jesus Christ, I doubted every decision that I had ever made. Was God really with me? I didn’t know Jesus back then, so how do I know this is what He wanted for my life?
I went back and prayed many times for God to show me that I was in the right place. But for some reason, what I doubted most of all was my career.
Since God wasn’t with me, I thought, then I didn’t make the decision to be a lawyer with Him. I struggled for years as an attorney, always wondering if I was supposed to be here in this profession. Did God know I was here? Did God see me? Surely He would correct my decision.
While I continued to discern this while I was working in a non-lawyer job, the Holy Spirit came to me and said, “He is always with you and was with you even back then.” I kept hearing these words in my head, knowing that I was not in the right place.
What was important about that discovery was not that I knew for sure that I was supposed to be in my career, but knowing that God was always with me, even before I knew Him.
If you are struggling this Lent with a decision you made in your life before you had a relationship with Jesus or while you may have been away from the church, remember that He was with you then as He is with you now. If you are not in the right place, He will move you. But chances are, you’re exactly where you are supposed to be.
Rather than taking a desert journey like me, learn from my mistake. Never doubt God. He is with you. He is everywhere. And before anything came to be, He was, I AM.
