Don't Move
Why waiting for the Holy Spirit is the answer to your prayer
but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high
Luke 24:49 (b)
Wait. This is what Jesus told the disciples to do before He ascended into heaven. But they weren’t waiting in vain, they were waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit.
I often find myself wondering why God is not answering my prayers. I go back and review the scriptures to ensure my will is in line with God’s. Then I question. Then I get frustrated or become impatient. But I know that I cannot make a move until the Holy Spirit tells me to do so.
Recently I went to confession and poured my heart out to Father over a relationship that I am struggling with. I have been patient Father and I have been kind and I have no idea why this person will not talk to me. Father gave me some very wise words,
“You cannot do anything. Stay right where you are. Pray that God will soften her heart.”
I think we have all been there at one time or another. We’ve had a misunderstanding or an exchange that went terribly wrong. Someone is not talking to us and we don’t know why. We are sad, angry, and broken asking God why. When heaven doesn’t answer, we become frustrated and may begin to lose hope.
The gospel passage reminds us that timing is everything. That Jesus, just as He predicted his betrayal, death and resurrection also knows the timeline of our lives. Without His power, we cannot yet move forward. In the waiting, He is teaching us to listen, to trust Him, and to continue praying.
Today, remember to wait for Jesus. Stay right where you are, and pray for the power of the Holy Spirit and for God’s perfect timing.
Thank you for this beautiful and powerful reflection. It really spoke to me and is just what I needed to hear today!
Melissa, this was really good and spot on for some things in my life. Waiting is hard, but your reflection was the motivation I needed this morning.
